Xbox Developer Mode Activation for PS5X

PS5X's public Xbox package is installed in Developer Mode on Xbox Series X or S. The Xbox Dev Mode app, a Microsoft developer account, and switching the console into Dev Home are three separate parts of that setup. The complete PS5X setup guide continues after Dev Home is ready.

Microsoft's activation and account instructions reviewed: October 23, 2026.

Before You Activate

You need a retail Xbox Series X or Series S, a Microsoft account that can finish Partner Center app developer registration, and access to Microsoft Store on the console. Microsoft's Developer Mode feature also exists on Xbox One, but the reviewed public PS5X package excludes Xbox One.

For a new developer account, start at Microsoft's Store developer entry ↗. Microsoft says this new onboarding route has no registration fee. It may ask for identity verification. Entering through another Partner Center or Xbox link can show the legacy registration flow; follow the instructions actually shown for your account. Read Microsoft's current account steps ↗.

Developer account registration does not activate a console by itself. The activation code from the Xbox Dev Mode app must still be entered on Microsoft's Xbox devices page.

Activate on Your Console

  1. In the console's normal Retail Mode, install the official Xbox Dev Mode app from Microsoft Store and open it.
  2. Note the activation code displayed by the app. Keep it private. On your PC or phone, complete developer-account registration if needed, then sign in to Partner Center's Xbox devices page ↗ with that account.
  3. Enter the console's code, accept Microsoft's activation terms, and wait for the console's activation progress to finish. Microsoft limits the number of device activations associated with an account.
  4. In the Xbox Dev Mode app, choose Switch and restart. The restart can take longer than an ordinary restart.

Success check: The console opens Dev Home. Merely installing the Xbox Dev Mode app or entering its code is not yet the same as running in Developer Mode. Microsoft's console activation procedure ↗ remains the source for the current screens.

Know Which Mode You Are In

What you see on the console Mode What it means for PS5X
The usual Xbox Home screen and retail games Retail Mode Return to Xbox Dev Mode and choose Switch and restart before deploying the PS5X package.
Dev Home and developer app controls Developer Mode Continue to Device Portal and package installation. Retail games and retail apps are unavailable while this mode is active.
The Xbox Dev Mode app still shows a code or activation progress Activation in progress Finish Microsoft's activation steps first; do not treat this as Dev Home.

Developer Mode is a testing environment, not proof that a particular PS5 game boots or plays. Check the Xbox-specific game evidence separately.

Switch Modes Later

To return to normal Xbox games, open Dev Home → Quick Actions → Leave Dev Mode. The console restarts in Retail Mode. To return to the PS5X environment later, open the Xbox Dev Mode app in Retail Mode and choose Switch and restart. These actions switch the console mode; they are not website tabs or a PS5X setting. If you are using a managed Xbox development kit rather than a retail console, follow your program's instructions; Microsoft says the retail Xbox Dev Mode app is not for that hardware.

If Activation Stops

Where it stops Check next
The developer-account page does not show Apps & Games Finish registration and identity steps under the same Microsoft account. Microsoft says the new Partner Center tile may take a few minutes to appear after onboarding.
The console code is rejected or the devices page lacks an entry field Confirm you are signed into a valid, fully registered Partner Center app developer account; return to Microsoft's activation instructions ↗. Do not post the code publicly.
Activation appears complete but normal Xbox Home still opens Open the Xbox Dev Mode app and use Switch and restart; success is Dev Home after restarting.
Dev Home opens but Device Portal does not Activation succeeded. Continue with the separate Device Portal checks.

For a visible error that does not match a row, record the stage and error text without account credentials, then use the full troubleshooting guide. This page cannot inspect Microsoft's account status for you.

Next Step

Once Dev Home is visible on an Xbox Series X or S, go to setup Step 2 for the reviewed Xbox package, then Step 3 for Device Portal. The public download and the Xbox One demonstration have different device targets.
